Cumbria Police have confirmed a 90-year-old man from the Carlisle area has died following a collision this afternoon on London Road.
The collision occurred at around 12:45pm and involved a Nissan Micra and a van.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “The man who was driving the Nissan Micra has died.
“The passenger of the Mercedes van was treated at the scene and the driver was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary having suffered what are believed to be minor injuries.
“Both are from the West Cumbria area.”
The road was closed while collision investigators examined the scene.
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire engines from Carlisle east and Carlisle west attended a road traffic collision on Harraby Grove, Carlisle.
“The collision involved one light goods vehicle and one car.
“One person was extricated by fire service personnel using hydraulic cutting equipment and handed over to the care of the air ambulance service.
“Fire crews were in attendance for approximately one hour and thirty minutes.”
London Road has now reopened.
