Copeland communities to mark Remembrance Sunday

EVENTS will take place around Copeland to mark Remembrance Sunday (November 11).

Whitehaven

From 10am, the parade will assemble outside Copeland Council’s offices, on Catherine Street. The parade to the cenotaph in Castle Park begins at 10.40am, and a service and wreath-laying takes place at the cenotaph at 10.55am.

The parade then leaves the cenotaph (at 11.15am) and along Lowther Street, where a moment will be observed as the parade marches past Private Acton’s memorial plaque at St Nicholas’ Gardens. The parade will then proceed via King Street and Market Place for a Service of Remembrance in the United Reformed Church.

Following the service, a pie and pea lunch will be served at Whitehaven Civic Hall to those who have taken part in the parade.

Church bells will also be ringing at St James’ and St John’s Churches, and an Act of Remembrance will take place during the morning service at St James’ (11am start).

Millom and Haverigg

From 8.30am, the parade will assemble at the Pensioners’ Hall, on Mainsgate Road. The parade will start at 9.30am, and people are invited to join the parade at any stage, ahead of the service at St George’s Church at 10am. The parade will then go on to the cenotaph for wreath-laying.

After the parade, there will be a pie and pea lunch at Millom Palladium, followed by the singing of wartime songs.

At 2:30pm, the marchers will reassemble at the harbour in Haverigg to begin a march along Main Street to St Luke’s Church for a service.  The service will be followed by wreath-laying at the memorial, followed by afternoon tea at the Institute.

Cleator Moor

A Remembrance Service will be held at St John’s Church at 2.40pm, followed by wreath-laying at the war memorial on the Square, and a brief service at the Methodist Church. Light refreshments will be served in the Methodist Church Hall following the service.

Egremont

From 10.45am, the parade will assemble at Ehen Court Road and march to the war memorial for a service at 11am. A service will then take place at St Michael and St Mary’s Church, followed by entertainment and refreshments at the Egremont Royal British Legion.

Moor Row

A short wreath-laying service will take place at the war memorial at 1pm.

St Bees

Wreaths will be laid on the war memorial at 10.15am, before a service in the Priory at 10.45am. From 3pm, there will be a tea party with songs, followed at 6pm by a short service at the bell tower.

Frizington

An ecumenical community service will be held in Frizington Community School’s hall, Main Street, at 1.30pm, followed by the laying of wreaths at the war memorial opposite the school.

Irton

The parish churches of Waberthwaite, Muncaster, Eskdale, Irton and Drigg are holding a joint service at St Paul’s Church, Irton, at 10am. An Act of Remembrance will follow at the war memorial.

Parton

A wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the war memorial in the Square at noon.

Kirkland

An Act of Remembrance will take place during the 9am service at Kirkland Mission.

Lamplugh

A service will take place at St Michael’s Church at 10.30am, followed by wreath-laying at the war memorial in the churchyard.

Ennerdale

A service will take place at the war memorial in the churchyard  at St Mary’s Church at 2.30pm.

Black Combe

St Mary’s Church, Whitbeck, will host a service at 10.45am.

Events are also taking place around the borough in the week before, and the week after, Remembrance Sunday. Details of these are available locally.
