Council agrees transfer of Longlands Park to community

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has transferred the ownership and management of Longlands Park in Bowness to Windermere Town Council (WTC).

The move agreed by members of the council’s cabinet today will see the town council assume responsibility for the site, which includes a play area and Bowness Bowling Club. The area is currently owned by SLDC on behalf of a charitable trust.

The district council will assist WTC in maintaining the park and the transfer will enable the town council and Bowness Bowling Club to agree how the ambitions for the play area and the club may progress  to secure investment in facilities.

Members of WTC have said that they believe they can create a more valuable site for the community, potentially through the creation of a small area for allotments, ideas for a community garden and the possibility of renewing the play provision on site.

SLDC supports the principle of local community ownership and management of park, play and recreational facilities. This improves the prospect of securing external funding for investment in the site, both in regard to the bowling and play facilities. It will also enable local community-based decision making on the future use of the grassed and play areas.

Jonathan Brook

Councillor Jonathan Brook, South Lakeland District Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Housing, People and Innovation, said: “SLDC is committed to working with local communities and helping them deliver those services that matter to them.

“We are delighted to be able to help Windermere Town Council run this park and look forward to supporting them in securing a bright future for both the play area and Bowness Bowling Club.”

Councillor Graham Vincent, South Lakeland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy and Assets, said: “Wherever there is a local demand and sound reasons for doing so the council will look to transfer or sell local assets to town and parish councils and community groups. We are sure this move to community ownership and management for Longlands Park will benefit everybody who uses this excellent facility and the wider community.”
