WORK has started to revitalise St Nicholas’ Gardens, Whitehaven.
Copeland Borough Council’s Parks and Open Spaces team has begun digging up flower beds, weeding paths and edging the lawns, in preparation for bed planting in spring.
The work needed to rejuvenate the gardens will take place over the next nine days and will leave the area looking neat and tidy for residents to enjoy.
The programme of works has been part funded by Whitehaven Town Council in partnership with the Parish of Whitehaven Church Council.
The partnership saw an initial £10,000 spent on improving the much-loved Whitehaven town centre gardens in Autumn 2018.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “We received an enormously positive response from our residents and visitors when the gardens were transformed in autumn last year.
“We want residents to know that we won’t be resting on our laurels with regards to the work needed to maintain the area. We have a programme of work scheduled over the coming months and this is just the start of the efforts that you can expect to see throughout this year.
“Our Parks and Open Spaces team has worked, and continue to work, incredibly hard to maintain the gardens and I’d again like to take this opportunity to thank the team, Whitehaven Town Council and the church council for their support in helping to create a space that our residents can enjoy and be proud of.”
Brian O Kane, Whitehaven Town Councillor, said: “It certainly is a real pleasure seeing the differences that are being made to the gardens.
“Returning the pride we feel in our town will be a slow process, but one that the Council with help is determined to continue to strive to deliver.
“The gardens this year will hopefully serve as the centrepiece of Whitehaven in Bloom and a range of town centre activities are planned for the summer period.
“Our sincere thanks goes to our partners in endeavouring to progress, especially the Parish of Whitehaven Church Council for allowing us to help and to Copeland Council’s Parks and Open Spaces team who are taking enormous pride and care in their work.
