Training experts launch new apprenticeship drive for SMEs

Shirley Williams, development director at PHX Training

A Workington training provider is reaching out to Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) encouraging them to employ apprentices to boost business at a time of uncertainty.

PHX Training offers tailored support to meet the specific needs of SMEs in various levels of apprenticeships available to those aged 16 or over.

Shirley Williams, development director of PHX Training, said that there is a new focus on supporting SMEs following a government announcement on apprenticeship fees contribution. Changes mean that employers with fewer than 250 people with an annual turnover not exceeding 50 million Euros will have fees cut from 10 per cent to five per cent.

Shirley said: “We can adapt any working environment for an apprentice to specifically meet the needs of the business. This will include training, mentoring and skills building. We carry out needs’ analysis with SMEs, helping the scheme to run as smoothly as possible.

“Many of those taking up apprenticeships are still in work and we want to help them as effectively as possible. Small businesses can’t always afford to let people off for training all week or even sometimes just one day a week so we will work with them for the most effective results.”

PHX Training offers support in several industries including warehousing, retail, business and administration, hospitality, team leading and security industry training. The team delivers government-backed initiatives, adult skills, NEET (not in education, employment or training), employability contracts, apprenticeship training and work-based learning programmes.

The PHX team of qualified trainers delivers a diverse range of resources including offline, online and face-to-face services at six training centres in Barrow, Carlisle, Workington, Morecambe, Preston and Blackpool
