
Carlisle City Councillor Marilyn Bowman has been appointed Carlisle’s first citizen for the Municipal year 2019/2020.
Councillor Bowman has taken on the Mayoral role after serving a year as Deputy Mayor to former Mayor, Mrs Jessica Riddle.
Sworn in at today’s Mayor Making Ceremony (Monday, 20 May) in the City Council Chamber, the Conservative Councillor for Wetheral & Corby recited the ancient Mayoral Oath giving her allegiance to the city and its citizens. Councillor Pam Birks was sworn in as the Deputy Mayor.
Councillor Bowman was born in Cumbria and educated at Shap and Penrith.
She worked as an Office Administrator for R. Lloyd (Carlisle) before training as a telephonist. She later combined her skills as a telephonist/receptionist before moving to Carlisle to start a new business with her husband Sydney.
She has been married for 51 years, has two children, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was elected to Carlisle City Council in 1999 to represent Stanwix Rural Ward, and she has served on the Direct Services Board, Licensing, Scrutiny Panels and on the Executive which she was member for nine years with the responsibility for Economy.
Her time on the Executive was a highlight of her political career as well as acting as Vice Chairman of the Business and Transformation Panel.
Cllr John Mallinson was appointed Leader of the Council.
