Barrow residents raise £629 to support people with dementia in hospital

Residents at Ramsey Park Independent Living Scheme in Barrow have raised a staggering £629 for Bay Hospital Charity, which will go towards providing dementia trolleys for several of the wards at Furness General Hospital.

The trolleys can be themed and include activities such as books, jigsaws and prompt cards that help patients with dementia to reminisce.

The cash was raised from a tombola, raffle and bric-a-brac sale at a Fun Day on Thursday 18 April 2019.

The residents decided to raise funds for dementia because it is very close to their hearts as they have friends and family with dementia – a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. They also wanted to give something back to the hospital for all the care they have received over the years.

Ramsey Park – owned by Accent Group – offers flats for couples or single people over the age of 60.

Dianne Smith, Dementia Matron, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We can’t thank the residents at Ramsey Park enough for this fantastic contribution which will go towards a really worthy cause.”

Kathy Corn, Scheme Manager for Ramsey Park, said: “It’s always such a pleasure to help raise funds for Furness General Hospital.  We had decided to raise funds for the second year running for dementia as it is a cause so close to our hearts.  It is nice to give something back to our local hospital.”

The residents previously raised £511 for South Lakes Birth Centre in 2017 and £442 for dementia care at FGH last year.

Heidi Bowron, Charity Engagement Co-ordinator, Bay Hospitals Charity, added: “Bay Hospitals Charity is a registered charity which raises money to help improve patient care and the hospital experience at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust hospitals.

“Every day incredible things happen across our hospitals, but this is not without cost. By donating to Bay Hospitals Charity you can help fund the latest equipment and help make your local hospitals more comfortable, ensuring you get the best possible care and treatment possible.”
