New Parliamentary candidate Matthew Severn alongside local Lib Dem members

Last Thursday, Liberal Democrat members in Penrith and the Border elected Matthew Severn as their new prospective Parliamentary candidate.

Matthew, 33, is a district councillor and runs an independent bookshop. Previously he was an insurance broker dealing with flood claims, including in the aftermath of Storm Desmond.

Matt is married to Penny and they have a young daughter.

Commenting on his selection, Matt said: “It is an absolute delight and a huge honour to be selected as your Parliamentary Candidate.

“I look forward to travelling the length and breadth of the constituency meeting people.  I will be standing up as the authentic true voice for Britain remaining in Europe, for a People’s Vote to Stop Brexit and to protect the farming industry, your food and the environment from a No Deal Brexit.

“The Liberal Democrat vision doesn’t stop there though. I will also be fighting to see proper affordable housing for families and young people built.  I’ll be pushing for more funding to improve access to GPs surgeries, dentists and mental health services.  And I’ll work with the Liberal Democrat leadership of Eden Council and the Liberal Democrats on Cumbria County Council to take real action to tackle the climate change emergency.”

Responding to recent speculation, the Penrith and Border Liberal Democrats have also confirmed that there are no current deals with other party or independent candidates and that they will not be standing aside in any forthcoming snap General Election.
