Annual Hill Bred Ewe Show & Sale 2019

On Thursday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Show & Sale of 6,130 Uncrossed & Crossed Swaledale, Herdwick & Cheviot Ewes, Shearlings and Gimmer Lambs.

A top class show entry of draft Swaledale Ewes, Shearlings & Gimmer Lambs & Herdwick Ewes & Shearlings drew much praise from the judges Mr A Brown, Asby Hall, Mr B Harvey, Waxham Hall and referee Mr J Tully, Burncroft. A fantastic show of eight pairs of Herdwick females were forward to the judge Mr S Jackson, Nook Farm. The shows were kindly sponsored by The Lake District National Park and Peter Horn Mobile Sheep Dipping.

One of the best shows of breeding sheep was forward and commented on by many customers during the day. A packed ring side of buyers were in attendance from start to finish with many vendors reporting an increase of £8-£12 on the year.

Topping the sale at £550 was a fabulous pair of bright and strong boned three crop Swaledale ewes from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, selling to Mr Conway, Co Tyrone.

Champion honours went to Messrs EJ & RJ Weir, Howe Green for the fifth year running with a pen of strong powerful well bred two crop ewes selling to regular customers Messrs Blakey, Harrogate.

A new class for 2019 was held for the best pair of Herdwick ewes, which created some great spirit and enjoyment. The Champion honours went to AD & T Harrison, Brotherilkeld Farm, Holmrook with a pair of two crop ewes in great order and grand characteristics, they went on to realise £450 each, selling to undisclosed buyers.

An outstanding run of two crop North Country Cheviot ewes were forward from Mr R Weir, Chapel Farm, who run averaged £127.60 and topped at £136 selling to Mr Nicholls, North Devon.

  • 2nd Haltcliffe – realising £54.
  • 3rd Messrs TW & JR Rebanks, Racy Ghyll Farm – realising £58.

Class 3 – Pen of 10 Swaledale Shearlings

  • 1st Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside – realising £200.
  • 2nd Messrs JB & CJ Little, Pewter Close – realising £112.
  • 3rd Messrs TW & JR Rebanks, Racy Ghyll Farm – realising £80.

Class 4 – Pen of 10 Swaledale Ewes

  • 1st Messrs EJ & RJ Wear, Howe Green – realising £380.
  • 2nd Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside – realising £300.
  • 3rd Messrs Folder, Wesco – realising £140.

Class 5 – Pair of Herdwick Females

  • 1st Messrs AD & T Harrison, Brotherilkeld Farm – realising £450.
  • 2nd Mr Bland, West Head Farm – realising £87.
  • 3rd Messrs CA & JR Brown, Deepdale Hall – realising £68.
