A UK startup is asking for crowdfunding in order to restore an iconic derelict boathouse which sits on the banks of an isolated tarn in the Lake District.
The small building is a hidden gem located amongst the mountains of the Lake District National Park in the remote valley of Eskdale, just South of Scafell Pike, England’s Highest Mountain’.

It has been standing on the shore of its own lake for more than 200 years. However, an urgent intervention is needed to secure the remaining structure which will be converted into a fully off-grid architectural cabin for city dwellers to escape into nature.

The team at Cokoon is rethinking the traditional ways of developing architectural project and want to invite a wider community to co-create the boathouse. By inspiring a community of enthusiastic people around this project, the team hopes to crowdfunding the materials for the construction and soon unlock the start of work on site.
Once the project is completed, backers will be rewarded with the chance to stay in this architectural jewel and have the surrounding landscape just for themselves. Obviously, as a functioning boathouse, a boat will be available at all times for future guests to jump into and explore the lake.
Henry Unterreiner, Co-founder said: “By inspiring a community of enthusiastic passionate people, we’ll make the magic happen!”
Cokoon’s endeavour is part of a larger movement to promote the circular economy and small living in closer harmony with nature. By reusing a derelict building and making the boathouse an example of remote off-grid living, the team wants to demonstrate that it is possible to bring comfort to remote natural places while having minimum ecological impact.
