Victims of domestic abuse in Allerdale are being urged not to suffer in silence and reassured that the borough council is on hand to support people who have left, or need to leave, their homes because of it.

Allerdale’s housing options team is working hard to continue to help those who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, or need to leave the home because of domestic abuse. The service is still in operation despite the coronavirus pandemic and will do everything it can to support people in need.

The council has a specialist domestic violence officer to provide advice and support for those who need it, however, if someone is in immediate danger they are asked to call police on 101 or 999.

Marion Fitzgerald, Allerdale Executive member with responsibility for policy, governance and people resources, said: “As we have heard on the national news recently, the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic can lead to increased stresses and strains within families.  However, no one should ever have to suffer abuse from a family member or be made to feel unsafe within their own home.

“If that is the case, and individuals find themselves in need of support, then please be assured that the council’s housing options team is there to help. Despite the pressures on all public services at the present time, this support continues to be available for those who need it.”

Cumbria Police continues to treat domestic abuse very seriously. It is maintaining services to support victims, keep children safe and target perpetrators.

A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: “It is business as usual for Cumbria Police when it comes to domestic abuse. We would urge people to really look out for their family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues during this challenging time and report any concerns you have to us.

“Domestic abuse is a key priority for the constabulary and we will always listen to and help victims. We are really pleased to hear that Allerdale Borough Council are working to support victims of abuse by providing safe accommodation.”

Those who require housing support from the council are asked to call 01900 702660 in office hours (or 0303 123 1702 out of hours if it’s an emergency) if possible.

More info on the support available from Allerdale BC can be found HERE.
