Choose Occupational Health, a Carlisle-based occupational health company, have found a novel way to maintain their physical and mental well-being while on lockdown – by taking on a virtual ‘Three Peaks’ Challenge.

The family-run occupational health company, who have recently been crowned joint winners in the People’s Choice Award – Cumbria, in the North West Family Business Awards, are attempting to climb the equivalent distance and altitude of the ‘Three Peaks’ from the comfort of their own homes.

Due to the current situation, the closely knit team have been missing the office camaraderie and team spirit, so when Officer Administrator Beki Turner-Saunders suggested that they take on the challenge, the rest of the staff jumped at the chance.

The real ‘Three Peaks’ Challenge includes Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. Although the official route measures just 23 miles, some attempts have recorded 80,000 steps which is the equivalent of 45 miles. The team will be walking the equivalent number of steps – but instead of being in the actual location, they’ll be doing it at home! As well as completing the number of steps in distance they are also trying to achieve the same accumulative altitude by incorporating 1579 flights of stairs.

Nine team members will take part. At the end of the day each member of the team will log their daily steps and flights accumulated from their daily walk, running up and down the stairs or by simply using a step machine. They aim to complete the challenge in one week.

Managing Director Sandra Holliday said: “We are devastated to see so many local businesses struggling to survive in these difficult times, and we have been supporting our clients as best we can. Many organisations have had to quickly adapt to new working situations and staff members can find it very isolating. Taking on a physical challenge which allows all the team to participate and contribute to a common goal is a great way to connect. It’s a fantastic way to maintain physical and mental well-being and I’m loving seeing daily updates from my team. As we move into the future, many organisations will be forced to find innovative ways to tackle new challenges – and I’m proud that Choose Occupational Health have already started thinking outside the box!”

The team are documenting their progress on social media channels.
