An Electricity North West engineer

A major £1.5m project replacing crucial electrical assets in a Cumbria town is underway.

Electricity North West, which operates the region’s power network, has started work at its substation beside its depot on Parkside Road, Kendal.

Engineers are replacing a 132,000-volt transformer along with other assets in the substation which were installed in the 1960s.

The new assets will benefit more than 58,000 customers in Kendal and the surrounding areas including Windermere, Ambleside, Arnside, Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale and Paul McGonigle, Transmission Project and Programme Manager for Electricity North West, said: “Electricity North West is providing a critical service throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“Colleagues have been designated as key workers and as well as responding to faults, it’s essential we carry out upgrades and maintenance on the power network.

“The work in Kendal is a necessity, it will benefit tens of thousands of customers and the new assets will help provide a secure supply to residents for many years to come.”

While work is being carried out, Electricity North West engineers will adhere to the current Government guidelines in place including social distancing.

This work is the first phase of major electrical asset replacement at the substation with further work being planned.
