A chef, geologist and interior designer are just a few of the many industry experts taking part in this year’s virtual Copeland Skills Fair.

Hosted by Trudy Harrison MP, Skills Fair 2020 will take place between 24th and 28th August, offering young people and those looking to retrain or upskill a chance to discuss exciting career pathways and training opportunities with industry experts.

Major local companies and businesses, as well as training and education providers will be taking part in the five-day event, including West Cumbria Mining, Lakes College and the National Farmers Union.

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, this year’s fair is being held virtually, with experts in their fields taking part in pre-recorded webinars along with short filmed interviews exploring a range of careers which will be uploaded throughout the day to social media and Trudy’s website.

Trudy, said: “Over the last three years, the annual Copeland Skills Fair has been really popular, helping to connect people of all ages with education, training and career opportunities, and this year we are going virtual.

“My aim is to inspire and introduce folk to jobs they may never have previously considered and to promote the plethora of courses, traineeships, apprenticeships and degree qualifications available across an enormous range of sectors.

“There is a local focus because it’s been an inspiration to me, to learn of the immense opportunities on our doorstep, but we will include opportunities further afield too.”

The virtual event will be split up into five different stages, each focusing on three separate industries a day, with stage one taking place on Monday 24th August centring around agriculture, tourism and health related opportunities.

Day two will have a focus on nuclear, transport and public sector roles, while day three will provide the chance to learn more about skills, qualifications and apprenticeships.

Virtual workshops offering guidance around application processes along with expert CV advice and interview tips will make up day four.

The final day of the event (28th August) will offer the chance to learn more about building your own business, including self-employment advice.

Catherine Wilson, recruitment and admissions leader at Lakes College, said: “We’re thrilled to be taking part in the virtual event. We attended the Skills Fair last year and it was a huge success. Events like these provide a great opportunity to showcase the amazing opportunities which are available at Lakes College and to answer any questions that people may have.”
