Council tax reduction for residents in Allerdale struggling to pay bills

Many residents in Allerdale who are struggling to pay the bills due to the coronavirus outbreak, will benefit this week from a reduction in their council tax.

Allerdale Borough Council has received funding from the government in response to the coronavirus outbreak to further reduce council tax bills for working age claimants eligible for the council tax reduction scheme by up to £300.

The council will be writing to all recipients of the fund to inform them of how much they will receive from this week. For many of our recipients, especially those in employment affected by low pay, furlough or redundancy it means they will have less to pay this year.

Those already in receipt of support from the scheme do not need to do anything. The council will automatically credit the council tax bills.

Anyone who thinks they may be entitled to support from the council tax reduction scheme but have yet to apply can find out more on the council’s website: https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/council-tax/council-tax-discounts/council-tax-reduction-low-income/

Cllr Alan Pitcher, Executive member with responsibility for Customer Experience and Innovation, said: “I’m really pleased that the government has been able to provide this funding so that we can help residents throughout Allerdale who are suffering financially through no fault of their own due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“We are committed to ensuring we have resilient communities and this includes helping those most in need.  I would, therefore, encourage anyone who is facing financial hardship to contact us to find out what help might be available to them.”

The council is also committed to use some of the government funding to provide assistance to others who are not entitled to the reduction but are also facing financial hardship. More details will be announced on the council’s website soon.
