Mayor of Workington, Cllr Janet King

On 3rd September 2020, the Red Ensign, the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag, was raised at the Town Hall in Workington to celebrate Merchant Navy Day.

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day has taken place on 3rd September to honour the brave men and women who helped our country stay afloat during both World Wars. The day also celebrates dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for over 90% of the UK’s imports, including almost half the food we eat, plenty of the fuel we rely on and virtually all the products and goods we tend to take for granted.

The flag was raised by the Mayor of Workington, Cllr Janet King.

Cllr King commented. “Even in the current situation, we are pleased we are still able to mark these important days with a flag raising. We thank those men and women for their sacrifice and for ensuring our country and people were able to survive during those difficult times. We thank them also for their efforts in bringing essential imports into the country and their continued dedication to the people of the UK.”
