Cumbria local named as a winner in the Sawday’s Pub Awards 2020

The prestigious annual Sawday’s Pub Awards, which have been run in partnership with The Telegraph to find the nation’s best-loved pubs, have been announced today (Saturday 5th September). Tweedies in Grasmere took the coveted title of Best Newcomer and was chosen for its community spirit and innovation.

Laura Goodall, General Manager of Tweedies said “We are delighted to receive this award.  2020 has been an extremely tough year for the industry and we have found it particularly challenging so it’s extra special to gain some national notoriety in what has been such a strange year.  We are pleased to say that we have hit the ground running since reopening at the beginning of July, although sadly, we have had to cancel this year’s ‘Grasmere Guzzler’ – our annual beer festival, which we would have been hosting this weekend and which has a great local following. Hopefully us being awarded ‘Best Newcomer’ by Sawday’s is a sign of good things to come!”

The awards entry for Tweedies, written by the Sawday’s team, says:

A family-run pub, right down to two of the owners’ sons bringing passions for beer and food into the bar and kitchen. The views of Grasmere are spectacular and the whole place caters perfectly for the hikers that flock to it. The relaxed bar welcomes muddy boots and paws with a menu of more than enough substance to keep you walking all day, although the giant communal roasts known as Sunday Sharers might end up anchoring you to your seat.

Starters from £5.50. Mains from £14.50. Sunday lunch sharing board £15.95 per person. Open daily – www.sawdays.co.uk/pubs/tweedies

Mike Bevens, Managing Director of Sawday’s, said: “This year, more than ever, we’ve seen pubs step up as pillars of their community, so it’s an absolute pleasure to recognise the best of the best in our annual Pub Awards. Deciding on our winners was as challenging as ever, so we welcomed The Telegraph’s readers input into our Pub of the Year and have an extremely worthy list of places taking awards this year.”
