Eden’s Executive approves Local Government Reorganisation proposal

Eden District Council’s Executive has approved the council’s proposal for Local Government Reorganisation in Cumbria at a meeting held on Tuesday 24 November.

The proposal follows a formal Government invitation for councils in Cumbria to submit locally-led proposals for unitary local government, which was received in October of this year.

Eden’s proposal outlines the Council’s vision for local government in the county, which includes adopting a two unitary model incorporating Eden, Carlisle and Allerdale in the North of the county and South Lakes, Barrow and Copeland in the South.

The proposal and business case will also be considered at an extraordinary meeting of the full Council on Tuesday 2 December.

The final proposal and businesses case will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, The Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, by December 9.

Eden District Council Leader, Cllr. Virginia Taylor, said: “This is a historic moment for Eden District Council, as we are required to decide which of a range of possibilities might bring the best for residents and businesses now and for future generations.

“In advance of the promised White Paper on Devolution and Recovery, there are no promises on the table for what Eden might gain from this reorganisation, but I can assure everyone that members and officers alike at EDC will do all we can to ensure that change brings improvements.”

The agenda for the Council’s extraordinary meeting can be found at: https://democracy.eden.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=167&MId=2987
