Furness College is rewarding students who have shown commitment to their studies in lockdown with an exciting virtual event called ‘12 Days of Christmas Greatness’.

For the first 12 days in December, students who have been nominated by staff for their achievements in the face of adversity will be awarded voucher prizes.

Names will be announced on the college’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin site and on the college website.

Today’s winners are Natalie Cooke, who studies Hairdressing at Channelside, and Art Foundation student Kelly Hannah, who studies at the sixth form.

Nominating her, Natalie’s tutor said: “Natalie is an outstanding student, who has faced a number of challenges. She is always positive and works extremely hard in all areas of college life.”

Kelly’s tutors said she had successfully completed her A Levels in Art and Photography during lockdown. “She always has a smile, is kind to everyone, and is extremely thoughtful to all her classmates,” they said.

Students were nominated for a variety of reasons, from using their time in isolation to get ahead with their Essentials independent learning study programme and develop key learning and employability skills, to relocating to Cumbria during lockdown. Other students were praised for supporting their fellow students during challenging times.

School liaison and events officer Sandra Rollinson said the idea of the event was to spread some festive cheer in what have been pretty challenging times.

“Each day we will have a ‘great student’ nominated by a staff member for a prize. This ties in with our new 2021 marketing campaign – Get Ready for Greatness.

“Many of our students have shown resilience and achieved their very best in the face of adversity and we think they deserve a special mention because of the way they have responded to learning in a global pandemic.

“We also hope to share these learning success stories back with our local schools, something positive, a little lighter and festive!”

A full list of winners will be revealed on day 12 but for now, check the daily winners on the college’s social media sites.
