A search has been launched to capture memories of one of Barrow’s most historic streets.
Re:discover Barrow aims to preserve recollections of Duke Street – a key town centre shopping area filled with listed and historic buildings.
Anyone who has lived, worked or shopped on the road – part of Barrow’s conservation area – is asked to share their memories of it to help make sure its history is recorded and kept safe for future generations.
It is also hoped they will form part of an online event; Re:discover Barrow – An Armchair Walk, from partner organisation Art Gene in the spring.
The event will provide an introduction to the Heritage Action Zone before taking viewers on an historical tour along the street from the comfort of their own homes.
Memories and stories can be shared via a range of options including by phone, in a voice message or by email.
Barrow Borough Councillor Helen Wall, lead member for heritage and wildlife, said: “Duke Street has such a rich character and is filled with historic properties and heritage.
“It has always been a busy hub which brought people from across Furness to shop, work and socialise.
“It played such an important role in the development and culture of the town and we would love to hear people’s memories of it over the years.
“Perhaps you visited as a child, shopped there many years ago or worked there.
“Maybe you have memories of Duke Street that have been passed down to you from family or friends.
“These are all very valuable and will help to build a vibrant picture of the area as it has changed over time.”
Duke Street secured £1.1 million in grant funding from English Heritage earlier this year.
It is one of just 14 Heritage Action Zones in the North West.
The money will be used to revitalise the street through physical improvements to properties, enhancements to public space and the delivery of cultural activities to regenerate and restore the historic character of the area to encourage people to learn about the history of Duke Street and its surrounds.

“We hope to find unusual and intriguing stories of shops or shop staff to bring the history of this fascinating street to life, telling its story through the memories of local people.”
