Work to start on affordable housing in Keswick

Otley Road, Keswick

Work to create affordable rented accommodation in the heart of Keswick for local people is about to start.

The Allerdale Borough Council-led project in Otley Road will see a former retail unit converted into four one-bedroom apartments.

Once complete, the scheme will bring the empty building back to life after sitting empty for many years having previously been a cycling shop and gas company offices.

The scheme has been developed after it was recognised by the council, following representations from businesses, that there is a shortfall of affordable accommodation in the town, in particular for local workers in the tourism industry.

Work is due to begin on February 1 and it is hoped the first tenants will be able to move into the units from this autumn.

Mike Johnson, deputy leader and executive member for economic growth, community development and placemaking, said: “Creating thriving towns and villages is a key part of our 10-year council strategy and one of the ways we are looking to do that is by ensuring there are suitable, affordable, decent homes for everyone.

“We know that there is a need for this type of housing in the Keswick area and this project will help local people and workers secure the accommodation they need.”

William King, company director of main contractors William King Construction, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Allerdale Borough Council on this refurbishment project, bringing quality and affordable housing to the local community.”

The plans gained approval from the Lake District National Park Authority last year.
