Businesses selling alcohol in hampers or other gifts are reminded that they need a licence to do so.
In the run up to Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and other celebrations, Carlisle City Council is asking businesses to ensure they have a licence if they want to sell alcohol to their consumers.
If they do not hold a premises licence, there is an option to apply for a temporary Event notice for ad hoc events however national legislation does not allow any discretion to accept the notice with less than five clear working days’ notice.
Businesses planning ahead to events are urged to apply soon.
Councillor Jo Ellis-Williams, chair of Carlisle City Council’s licensing committee and regulatory panel, said: “We want to do all we can to support local businesses but those selling alcohol need to follow the national legislation.
“Licences are in place to ensure the proper licensing rules are followed. We’re aware that some businesses are offering the sale of alcohol in hampers and other gifts – this is only allowed if the business holds either a premises licence or has a temporary event notice.”
