Discounted house-buying scheme launched by Copeland council

People who want to own their own new-build home are being given a helping hand by Copeland council.

It has launched a Discounted Sale scheme for Gleeson Homes’ development on Florence Drive in Egremont.

Eligible people can register their interest in a Discounted Sale property that can be sold for up to 80 per cent of its open market value.

The council will notify those on the register when Discounted Sale properties are awarded planning permission, and invite them to apply for when plots are released.

Residents who cannot afford to buy on the open market, who have a local connection to the parish or town and meet other qualifying criteria, will be prioritised initially.

The number of Discounted Sale properties provided is secured through the planning process and, in most cases, the discount applies to any subsequent sales of the property.

Gleeson Homes’ 28-property development, off Market Place, has three homes under this process.

Mike Starkie, mayor of Copeland, said: “We are delighted to support any opportunity that helps people find the right house for them.

“We know the scheme will provide opportunities for our residents to get their foot on – or move up – the property ladder, by accessing high-quality housing that they would otherwise be out of their price range.

“The eligibility criteria we have set out ensures that by assessing applicants’ housing need and their ability to purchase, we are matching up the right people with suitable, local housing, at an affordable price.”

Arron Passarelli, divisional managing director for Gleeson, said: “We are delighted to be adding three discount market sale plots to Florence Drive, our excellent new development in Egremont.

“These homes will allow local people to own a home they can truly make their own. The majority of our buyers live within five miles of their new home, therefore we develop homes for young people that allow them to stay within the areas that they already love, as well as remaining close to their families.”

The Discounted Sale Register is now live and application forms and all eligibility criteria are available at www.copeland.gov.uk/discounted-sales
