The origin of a large gas canister found in the middle of the road in Carlisle last week has been discovered by police.

Roads in the city were closed and traffic diverted after the canister was discovered in the carriageway of Caldew Bridge on Tuesday, February 9.

A police cordon was put in place and the roads was closed while emergency services and recovery services attended the scene.

Hardwicke Circus was also closed while recovery took place. The item was safely removed.

A statement issued by police this morning said: “A man has received a ticket for having an insecure load on a vehicle.

“The ticket was issued following an investigation into a large gas canister found on the carriageway of Caldew Bridge.

“Police would like to thank everyone who responded to the appeal for information.”
