The NSPCC has welcomed the sentence

A national charity has welcomed the sentence handed down to a Carlisle rapist.

Binge-drinking Carlisle “monster” Paul Devaney – who raped two women – was jailed for 18-and-a-half years at Carlisle Crown Court today.

Paul Devaney left one of his victims sobbing after continuing a sick sex attack despite her desperate attempts to push him away.

Detective Sergeant Chris Burton – who investigated the case – has hailed the sentence as “a great result”.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said: “Sexual abuse can have a devastating impact on children which can last into adulthood, and we trust the women Devaney assaulted are receiving the support they need.

“We would urge anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, no matter when it happened, to speak out and seek support, and we hope the victims in this case can find some solace knowing Devaney has faced justice for his sickening behaviour.”

Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111. Adults can contact the NSPCC helpline on 0808 8005000 or email [email protected]
