Cumbria’s first ever competitive floodlit T20 cricket match is set to be held in June.

Carlisle and Cockermouth are set to go head-to-head at Edenside on June 25.

The game, between the 2018 and 2019 Cumbria Premier League Champions is sponsored by Sunbelt Rentals, which is providing high quality floodlighting at Edenside.

This will be the fifth game for both teams in the new 2021 17 Sport Cumbria Cricket League T20 Competition.

The event will include external bars, barbecues, music and entertainment organised by IM Events in the form of Cumbrian duo High Dynamics.

Newly appointed Carlisle captain and club professional Michael Slack said: “I’m delighted to be captaining the club this season and in particular this inaugural floodlit T20 match.

“This post-lockdown event is something for the club and all its members to look forward to.

“I’m anticipating an entertaining evening in what should be a great game against a very strong Cockermouth side.”

Cockermouth’s skipper Gareth White added: “I can safely say that Cockermouth are delighted to have been chosen by Carlisle to play in this unique and exciting fixture.

“Carlisle are a fantastically run club and this game will be well-organised and well-received by the general public.

“After an incredibly tough 12 months, all aspects of society are looking forward to the easing of lockdown and this date, given its timing, comes perfectly at the end of these necessary restrictions and will give people in the cricketing and wider community something really positive and exciting to look forward to.”

Carlisle secretary Mark Davidson added “The club is delighted to be hosting this first ever floodlit cup match at Edenside in June. Everyone has endured such difficult times over the past twelve months and we hope that events like this will put a smile back on the faces of our members and supporters. We’re optimistic of a full season of cricket throughout the county this year as we make preparations both on and off the field at Carlisle”.

Carlisle CC will also play host to the 3 day National County Cricket Championship match starting Sunday 25th July, between Cumbria County Cricket Club and Northumberland County Cricket Club with play commencing at 11am each day.

The Cumbria League this week announced a new three-year sponsorship deal with Barrow based “17 Sport”. League Secretary Peter Gardiner said “We have great pleasure to announce that the league has agreed a three year sponsorship deal with 17 sport,  a local company based in Barrow in Furness, to cover all of our five cup competitions as well as the new T20 competition  beginning this season”.

The Cumbria Cricket League season (50 over competition) has been moved back to commence on Saturday 1st May from 17th April, when current Premier League Champions Carlisle visit neighbours Wigton, while 2018 Champions Cockermouth start their campaign at home to Millom.
