The second stage of a major housing development in Workington could be on the horizon.
Housing developer Gleeson Homes is seeking the go-ahead for reserved matters relating to phase two of a major housing development on land at Ashfield Road South in Workington.
The developer, which specialises in building low-cost homes, intends to build more than 200 new homes in addition to the 35 already built on the site by developer Mandale Homes.
A section 106 legal agreement had been put in place for the site in 2017, requiring that the development of the site be approached in a phased manner.
Gleeson Homes is now looking for approval for plans relating to the second phase of the development, which would involve the construction of a further 220 homes on the outskirts of Workington.
Allerdale Borough Council’s development panel will next Tuesday decide on a reserved matters application from Gleeson Homes, relating to the appearance, scale, landscape and layout of the next phase of the development.
Outline permission for the construction of up to 290 homes on the site was previously granted by Allerdale Borough Council in 2014.
A total of 38 homes are proposed to be designated as affordable, with 19 proposed as rental properties and 19 proposed as being offered for sale at a discounted rate.
Allerdale planning officers have recommended that the plans submitted for consideration by Gleeson Homes be approved by the council’s development panel.
There is also still in place an alternative pending reserved matters application for phase two of the development, submitted by Lovell Homes for 255 homes.
Thirteen representations have been made to Allerdale Borough Council regarding the proposals, raising an number of concerns regarding the plans.
However Allerdale planning officers stressed in documents prepared in advance of next week’s meeting that “the principle of development is not for consideration on this particular application.
“There is an outline permission in place for up to 290 dwellings and this application is for reserved matters pursuant to that application for phase two with a scheme for 220 residential units.
“The application is within the parameters of the outline permission.
“The representations relating to the principle and scale of the development cannot be considered.”
