Firefighters are reminding people in Cumbria about the dangers of swimming in open water as teams rescued two canoeists from a fast-flowing river.
A tweet from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said: “Please remember, even though the sun is shining the water levels are still high with fast-flowing water.
“Yesterday crews from Barrow, Grange, Kendal, and Ulverston attended a complex water rescue at the River Leven.
“A couple who were out canoeing were caught up in the fast-flowing water and came into difficulty. In collaboration with our partners, we rescued the causalities using line equipment. We’d like to remind people ahead of the weekend to #BeWaterAware and follow our safety advice.”
They issued the following advice:
- Plan your day – research the area, consider currents, tidal flow, wind direction, water temperature and weather.
- Have the right equipment – always wear a lifejacket, wetsuits and have dry clothes ready.
- Always take someone with you.
- Know your limits – plan and be aware of your exit points and avoid drifting in the currents.
- Know how to stay safe and get help – if you get into trouble or feel overwhelmed – float to live, catch your breath and think about your exit.
“The incident was great multi-agency teamwork involving North West Ambulance Service, Cumbria police, Great North Air Ambulance and BEEP Doctors with a great outcome,” added Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service.
