South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling on the operators of a care home threatened with closure to pause their decision.

Holehird care home, operated by Leonard Cheshire, is set to close leaving more than 60 members of staff without work and more than 20 residents without a home.

Tim submitted the motion this morning calling on Leonard Cheshire to pause their decision to close the care home until a new provider can be found to take it over.

The home, based on the outskirts of Windermere,  has been providing care for people with physical disabilities and complex needs for the past 60 years.

In a letter to Tim, the charity’s CEO Ruth Owen said that “we are willing to discuss your option of finding a potential new provider to take over the running of the home provided this can be explored as a high priority” but stressed that they would not be extending their deadline of closure by the end of this September.

Tim’s petition calling for the care home to be saved has now attracted more than 3,000 signatures.

Tim said: “Holehird is an incredibly special place which has been a massive part of the local community for the past 60 years.

“To lose it would be utterly unthinkable, both for the amazing staff who would lose their jobs and for the residents who would lose their home.

“I’m now taking this fight to Westminster and will be encouraging cross-party colleagues to sign our motion to put pressure on Leonard Cheshire to press pause on this devastating decision.”
