Emergency services were called last night after reports that a man was trapped on the cliffs near St Bees lighthouse.

Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and St Bees RNLI were scrambled to the scene and the Coastguard helicopter was also asked to attend to help guide the rope rescue team from above.

However, as the teams were getting ready to attend, the news came through that the man had managed to get himself free and was not in need of any assistance.

All assets were stood down.
