
Whitehaven moved into the top half of the Championship with an excellent 20-14 win at Newcastle Thunder.
The Cumbrians were completing a double over their hosts after winning the opening game of the season at home.
It represented an excellent comeback for Gary Charlton’s men as they had trailed 14-6 at half-time and kept a clean sheet in the second half.
Lachlan Walmsley had kicked them ahead with an early penalty but soon found themselves trailing as Newcastle scored two converted tries.
Ukuma Ta’ai and Kieran Gill got over and Josh Woods added the extras.
Whitehaven made inroads on the lead when a smart move ended with Karl Dixon going in at the corner but Thunder had the last word with a penalty from Woods.
It didn’t take long after the restart for Haven to cut the gap as Nikau Williams got in for the try which Walmsley converted.
Whitehaven continued to look dangerous and they went back in front with a well taken try from Andrew Bulman which was converted by Walmsley.
The Cumbrians were given just a bit more breathing space when Walmsley landed a late penalty.
