A Cumbrian company has bought a Lake District fell to combat the effects of climate change.
Buy Land Plant Trees is Chimney Sheep’s community interest company and has used proceeds from Chimney Sheep, which makes unique draught excluders for chimneys, has been used to buy Low Fell near Loweswater.
It is the third piece of land that Buy Land Plant Trees has purchased.
The company will plant trees, re-establish the moorland and restore the peat bog on the fell, as well as increasing habitats for wildlife.
It is hoped that the planting of trees will reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
Sally Phillips, ecologist and director of Chimney Sheep, will undertake the peat bog restoration project with help from Woodland Trust and Cumbria Rivers Trust.
The restoration will prevent flooding in the area, act as a carbon store and attract scarce plants and animals.
Sally said: “This is an extremely exciting project to take on and we hope that over time, the work we put into restoring the landscape to a more natural state on Low Fell will help to reduce some of the impacts of climate change in our local area.
“The next few months will be spent fixing fences, giving the land a rest from grazing to allow the heather and bilberry to recover, starting the process of the restoration of the peat bog and begin the planting of the willow trees.”
Chimney Sheep is the parent company of Buy Land Plant Trees.
