A Carlisle man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman more than two decades ago.
Paul Shakespeare, 66, appeared before Carlisle’s magistrates’ court on Tuesday and faced one charge of raping a woman in Cheltenham on April 29 1990 and another of being in possession of an adapted wooden stick with a sharpened end and nail on the same day.
Shakespeare, of Scaleby Close in Carlisle, did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance.
He will appear before Carlisle Crown Court on September 14 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
