Teams unite to show that Eden girls can

Women and girls are being offered the chance to try out rugby and cricket for free tomorrow in Eden.

Supported by the This Girl Can campaign, Upper Eden Eagles and Appleby Eden ladies cricket team have organised the event, at Upper Eden rugby club, to help more women get active.

No experience or kit is required.

The aim is to change how young women feel about sport and to give them a chance at proving they are capable, without being put off due to fear of judgement.

The club hosted a similar event in 2019, with over 40 women attending.

Laura Kay, Upper Eden Eagles player and club volunteer, said: “We wanted to follow on from the success of our 2019 event.

“Many women don’t have an opportunity to try traditionally male-dominated sports like rugby and cricket at school, and if they do, they often feel judged, self-conscious and not confident enough to really enjoy it.

“We want to prove that all the things we generally worry about around exercise – being sweaty, what we look like in sports clothes, not being fit enough or good enough, not knowing the rules – really don’t matter.”

Upper Eden Eagles are also encouraging girls aged 16 to 18 who may be interested in playing at the club to attend the event.
