A law firm with offices in the south of the county has been named one of the best rural businesses in the UK after winning a regional business award.

Thomson Hayton Winkley and The Rural Law Practice were named best Rural Professional Services Business at the North regional finals of the Rural Business Awards in partnership with Amazon, which took place virtually this year.

Thomson Hayton Winkley and The Rural Law Practice will now go on to represent the North at the national final of the Rural Business Awards in February 2022.

Thomson Hayton Winkley is a legal firm with a trusted local reputation having supported rural businesses and their families for over 160 years.

The Rural Law Practice is the dedicated branch office of THW based at the thriving Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre at the heart of the rural community.

It is staffed by a specialist team of lawyers with hands on experience serving a diverse range of rural businesses and clients. The RLP team is approachable, accessible and understands their clients as people and businesses, who also benefit from wider legal expertise within the THW family.

John Cooke, a director of Thomson Hayton Winkley, said: “We were surprised and delighted to hear that we had won, particularly given the North category covers such a large area including Scotland, and so are proud to be flying the flag for Cumbria.

“The award recognises the hard work that the rural team have put in to make the Rural Law Practice branch a success, blending the professional with the approachable and building on the long heritage that Thomson Hayton Winkley has helping farming and rural businesses and their families. I am also grateful to our clients and professional contacts who supported our entry.”

Other Cumbrian winners included The Quiet Site (Rural Tourism), Newlands Adventure Centre (Recreational or Outdoor Pursuits) and Dalefoot Composts (Sustainability and Environmental Impact).

The Rural Business Awards is the brainchild of Leicestershire businesswomen Anna Price and Jemma Clifford, who wanted to showcase the wealth of entrepreneurial talent in rural areas of Britain.

The Awards are organised by rural business for rural business, with winners in the 13 categories – ranging from Best Rural Start Up and Best Rural Diversification Project; through to Best Rural Professional Services Business and Best Rural Innovation – decided by an independent panel of judges drawn from the rural business sector, rural public sector agencies, and rural charitable organisations.

The Rural Business Awards is hosting a series of regional finals in the North, East, Midlands, South West, Wales and Northern Ireland, throughout this month, ahead of the national final next February.
