Two local creatives have collaborated to create a new children’s book, based in the Lake District about a father’s desire for owning items that fold.
The Folding Man is the outcome of this collaboration, written by Vincent Walden (Owner of Studio Walden) and Illustrated by Emily Ford.
Based on Vincent’s father Mike, the book follows his blissful ignorance as his family find themselves in great peril from his folding obsession. From a tandem to a spade, this
story based on true events highlights a much-loved quirk, brightly illustrated on paper.
Printed using Risograph soy-based inks on recycled paper, folded into a book from a single sheet of A3, Vincent said, “It’s the most sustainable way to produce a book at present”.
The book is published and produced by the duo in Carlisle and printed by Risotto Studio in Glasgow.
Vincent chose to commission Emily for this project as she’s a close friend and an established illustrator in the publishing industry, having her work published in multiple books already.
But for her, this project was different as she had more control through self-publishing, she added: “This was my first venture into self-publishing, the freedom to play around and have fun with layout and font allowed us to create something really exciting”.
For sale both online and locally, the book can be purchased through both Vincent and Emily’s online stores alongside being stocked in Bookends in both Carlisle and Keswick. With over fifty copies sold in the first week of release, Vincent hopes it will continue to prove popular.
Priced at £3 — the duo hoped to make the book an intriguing read for adults and early readers alike; making it affordable, bright and fun.
