Two weather warnings for wind have been issued for Cumbria with the Met Office warning of gusts of up to 80mph in some locations.
The yellow warning – the lowest level issued by the forecaster – comes into force at 12pm today and will remain in force until 11.59pm.
It warns of the potential for “a period of very strong winds to develop across northern Scotland on Friday afternoon then extend south during the evening.” The warning is in force for most of Cumbria, with only eastern parts of the county appearing to miss the worst of it.
What to expect
- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely;
- There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs;
- There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close;
- There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
The Met Office says the location and strength of the very strongest winds remains uncertain. However, gusts seem likely to reach 50 to 60mph widely, with 70 to 80mph possible in coastal locations, particularly in parts of Scotland.
A second yellow warning for wind has also been issued for Saturday.
This warning, which is in force from midnight until 6pm, will cover the whole of Cumbria.
