The deputy mayor of Workington has been found guilty of being drunk and disorderly and resisting police.

Maurice (Will) Wilkinson has today been found guilty and sentenced at West Cumbria’s magistrates’ court for being drunk and disorderly and resisting Cumbria Police.

Maurice Wilkinson, known as Will, who is an Allerdale Borough Councillor and Deputy Mayor of Workington on the town council was involved in a disturbance on Jane Street, Workington in the early hours of the morning August 15.

He has been fined £500 and must pay £750 prosecution costs and a £50 victim surcharge.

Pamela Fee, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West said: “Maurice (Will) Wilkinson verbally abused Cumbria police officers after he approached their car when they were advising youths of the dangers of standing in the middle of the street in the early hours of the morning.

“Wilkinson became increasingly aggressive and abusive towards officers and refused to move away from officers on request. When they attempted to arrest him for being drunk and disorderly, he flung his arms around in a threatening manner and then clung onto a lamppost to resist arrest whilst continuing to verbally abuse officers.

“We take offences against police officers, who work hard to keep our communities safe, extremely seriously. Alcohol clearly had a part to play in Mr Wilkinson’s behaviour that night. He is a public figure and should now reflect carefully on his actions.”
