A man was left with a fractured eye socket and three teeth knocked out — after starting an altercation in Ambleside by throwing the contents of a beer glass at a passing car.
CCTV captured Simon Morley standing drinking in the front yard of a guesthouse at Rothay Road on May 31.
Forty-year-old Morley threw the contents of his glass which spilt through the window of a passing car which was then driven around the address. The male driver got out and remonstrated with Morley, who squared up to him but then came off worse as violence erupted.
Morley was “hit a number of times”, Carlisle Crown Court heard how he was treated in hospital. He sustained a fractured eye socket, had three teeth knocked out and suffered several wounds which required sutures.
Morley, of Gregson Lane, near Preston, denied a charge of affray but when he appeared in front of a judge today (MON), he admitted a lesser public order offence.
“The defendant shouldn’t have responded as he did,” said Morley’s barrister, Kim Whittlestone. “He apologises for his actions.”
Judge Nicholas Barker imposed a £240 fine. He told Morley: “On this day you were behaving in a yobbish way on the streets. You threw beer at a passing car. That clearly inflamed the situation.” Judge Barker also said to the defendant: “Some might observe that you brought matters on to yourself.”
*Two men, both aged 23 and from Windermere, admit affray in connection with the same incident. They are due to be sentenced at the crown court next month.
