Initial work has begun at Workington’s Cumberland Sports Village.
Ground investigation surveys are underway at the site of the new complex, on the site of Workington Reds’ former Borough Park ground.
The initial work is designed to gather detailed information about the ground conditions before construction gets underway.
Cumberland Council, which is behind the scheme, said the surveys were a routine but essential part of the project.
It will help engineers to understand what the ground is like beneath the surface, including the type of soil and rock, how water moves through the site and whether there are any signs of contamination. This information will then be used to design the development properly and help reduce risks later during construction.
It added: “While the work is taking place, residents and visitors may notice specialist drilling equipment and see engineers carrying out tests, including drilling small holes, digging trial pits and taking samples.”
The work is being delivered by specialist contractors RG Civil Engineering and Surveying Ltd and Curtins Consulting Ltd and will move around the site as different areas are checked and will only be in place for a short time.
The surveys are expected to last for a few weeks.
The authority said there may be some temporary noise from the equipment, but disruption would be kept to a minimum wherever possible.
No road closures are expected, although there may be minor short-term changes to access close to where testing is taking place.
Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer said: “This is a necessary first step in bringing the Cumberland Sports Village to life. While this type of work might not be the most visible, it plays a crucial role in making sure we fully understand the site before construction begins.
“By carrying out these surveys now, we can plan with confidence and make sure the development is delivered safely and in the best possible way for our communities.”
The council added: “These surveys represent a key step in progressing the Cumberland Sports Village project, helping to ensure the development is designed and delivered safely, sustainably and with a clear understanding of the site conditions.”
The new stadium will be shared by Workington Town RLFC and Workington AFC, who are known as Workington Reds. They continue to be closely involved in the project.
The Community pitch will be undertaken by the Football Foundation.
