Cumbria’s police and crime commissioner is urging drivers not to drink or drug drive this Christmas.
Drink/drug driving is one of the biggest causes of fatalities on UK roads alongside speeding, distracted driving and not wearing a seatbelt, said commissioner Peter McCall.
He added: “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a selfish act and not only places the life of those under the influence at risk but also the lives of innocent drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
“Christmas is meant to be a time of celebration and no one wants to ruin the festivities by being caught over the drink or drug limit when driving or, worse, causing a serious or fatal accident while intoxicated.
“It is simply not worth it – make sure that if you are drinking that you have a designated driver or another safe option home.
“I would also like to remind everyone that alcohol and drugs can take time to exit your system and to make sure that you give yourself plenty of recovery time before driving the next day – just because you feel okay to drive doesn’t mean you are.
“There is zero tolerance for driving under the influence of any substance – if you are caught you will be reprimanded.
“I am sure most residents, like me, are appalled to see the increase in the number of people being caught behind the wheel under the influence of drugs.
“I do want people to be really clear, no level of drugs use is acceptable, it is against the law, the police do have the ability and kit to detect drug use and will use it.
“If you’re caught, you will be dealt with and I strongly support the police in taking action to get those who selfishly drive under the influence of either drugs or alcohol off our roads.
“Stay safe, drive sober and enjoy your Christmas.”
Inspector Graham Hawley, of Cumbria police, said: “We are urging people to considered how they are getting home this festive season.
“Book a taxi, via public transport or have a designated driver who’s not drinking to take you home.
“Please don’t get behind the wheel.
“There is no excuse for drink or drug driving. If you fail the alcohol or drug testing, you will face the devastating consequences.
“Drivers also need to consider that they maybe over the limit the morning after drinking alcohol.
“Whilst our officers will always be on the look-out for those who get behind the wheel whilst impaired, there is also a great deal the people of Cumbria can do in support of this.
“Make sure your friends and family are aware of the dangers and the potential consequences. Don’t get into the car if you suspect someone has been drinking or is unfit through taking drugs.
“Please call the police if you suspect someone of drink or drug driving. Your call could save their life or the life of another innocent road user.”
