A rubbish removal company has been fined £660 by a Carlisle court after a large pile of rubbish was found dumped on the roadside in North Cumbria.
DM Rubbish Removals from Newcastle upon Tyne – managed by Damien Martin – were also told to pay costs of £85.
At a Carlisle magistrates’ hearing on January 19, the court heard that the prosecution was the result of a large amount of household waste being fly-tipped on the highway on Moor Road, Longtown in February 2021.
After receiving reports of the fly-tipping, an investigation was carried out by the enforcement team at Carlisle City Council. The investigation led them to a waste removal company from Newcastle, despite trying to engage with the owner of the company they failed to produce any evidence of how their waste was being disposed of. A fixed penalty notice was issued but not paid.
Carlisle City Council would like to remind people to ensure they use a legitimate company for waste removal and that they see sight of documentation including waste transfer notes and licences.
Businesses are also reminded that if they take away someone else’s waste then you must keep a record of waste disposed of and where, these are legal documents that need to be kept for two years.
