Two Cumbrian businesses are throwing their weight behind the North West Family Business Awards.
Hawkshead Relish and Cartmell Shepherd have been announced as sponsors for the awards, which take place in Liverpool in May, hosted by food writer and broadcaster Nigel Barden.
As well as sponsoring this prestigious event, co-founder of Hawkshead Relish Maria Whitehead and Peter Stafford, of Cartmell Shepherd, will join the main judging panel.
Sam Lyon and Joanne Stronach, of Cartmell Shepherd, will judge the People’s Choice category before it goes to public vote.
After starting their family business in 1999, Hawkshead Relish now exports to over 12 countries, retails to over 500 specialist outlets across the UK, makes products for a number of leading food businesses and chefs and employs 31 staff; including the next generation of business leaders – their daughters.
Maria said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be asked to help judge these prestigious awards, over the last few years the Family Business Network has been an integral part of our growth and succession plan. These awards recognise the achievements of amazing Family Businesses in our region and are held in high esteem by the business community as a whole”

Sam said: “Cartmell Shepherd are delighted to sponsor the People’s Choice Cumbria award, recognising the public’s favourite family business in our region. Our team of commercial lawyers specialise in supporting family and owner-managed businesses throughout Cumbria, meaning we know first-hand how many outstanding family businesses there are right on our doorstep. We can’t wait to find out who will be the deserved winner on the night!”
You can vote for the People’s Choice category from March 18 until noon on Friday April 29, by visiting The North West Family Business Awards website.
Founder and co-director of the Family Business Network, Sue Howorth, said: “A big thank you to everyone at Hawkshead Relish and Cartmell Shepherd for supporting us once again, their business experience as a family business is second to none so we really are delighted to welcome them once again.”
