Four Cumbrian firms have been named as national finalists in the Rural Business Awards.

Thomson Hayton Winkley and The Rural Law Practice, of Kendal, Newlands Adventure Centre, near Keswick, The Quiet Site at Ullswater and Dalefoot Composts, near Penrith, will find out if they have been named among at the virtual final being held on February 24.

Thomson Hayton Winkley and The Rural Law Practice have been shortlisted in the Best Rural Professional Services Business category; Newlands Adventure Centre is in the running for the Best Rural Creative or Artisan Business category; The Quiet Side has been nominated for the Best Rural Tourism Business category and Dalefoot Composts, has been named as a finalist in the The Sustainability and Environmental Impact Award category.

Thomas Hayton Winkley and The Rural Law Practice is a specialist law practice that has been in operation for more than 160 years, helping with the legal needs of farming and rural businesses across Cumbria, North Yorkshire and North Lancashire.

Newlands Adventure Centre is an activity centre in Keswick. It provides a range of outdoor adventures and experiences such as kayaking, canoeing, bike tours and rock climbing across the Lake District.

The Quiet Side is a carbon-neutral holiday park in the Lake District National Park, which includes glamping cabins, pitches for motorhomes and many more facilities for overnight stays.

Dalefoot Composts creates peat-free composts. The business instead harvests bracken from the hills of Cumbria to create a range of sustainable composts.

Debbie Beament, director of Newlands Adventure Centre, said: “It was an honour to receive the regional award from the Rural Business Awards and Amazon. We are passionate about our region and can’t wait to represent Cumbria at the national final!”
