Ahmed Abdelaziz, of Windermere Lake Cruises

A Windermere Lake Cruises worker has been nominated for one of the tourism industry’s top national awards.

Ahmed Abdelaziz is one of 10 finalists in VisitEngland’s Tourism Superstar Award.

It celebrates those who go the extra mile to ensure tourists have an unforgettable visitor experience.

The winner will be decided by a public vote.

Father-of-two Ahmed has worked for Windermere Lake Cruises, overseeing the self-drive boats in Ambleside, for five years.

He said: “I was proud and delighted to be nominated for the Tourism Superstar Award. It’s lovely to have hard work appreciated in this way.

“With the pandemic, the last two years have been really difficult for everybody.

“It has been a challenge to make people feel comfortable and safe and happy while enjoying their visit to the Lake District.

“I always try and do that with a smile – and I hope that helps visitors have a lovely time.”

Ahmed is originally from Egypt and previously worked in hospitality in London before falling in love with the Lake District and making it his home.

Now in its 10th year, Tourism Superstar is run in partnership with The Mirror newspaper to recognise those who are passionate about their work in tourism.

The winner is decided by a public vote open between now and midnight on March 22.

Nigel Wilkinson, managing director of Windermere Lake Cruises, said: “Throughout his time with us Ahmed has never failed to ensure customers and colleagues are always smiling. He exudes enthusiasm which is contagious!

“He worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure he was protecting Windermere Lake Cruises passengers and staff and adhering to all the COVID-19 secure operating procedures the company put in place.

“He responded to every legislation change and adapted his working procedures accordingly – and he managed to do all of this with a smile on his face. We know, from their comments, our customers have really appreciated his efforts!”

Ahmed’s passion for his work and the Lake District saw him feature in Cumbria Tourism’s recruitment campaign for the industry – where he encouraged others to come and work in the Lake District.

Nigel added: “Ahmed is mentioned more than any other staff member on Trip Advisor and Google reviews, with customers even turning up to meet him, as they have read such wonderful reviews.

“He is extremely passionate about people and has always understood the importance of delivering a unique experience to each individual customer.”

The winner will be announced in the Mirror newspaper at the end of English Tourism Week on March 26.
