A Penrith man is learning the ropes of marketing, with the help of a local expert.
Adam Chubb, 20, is a marketing apprentice with Eden Valley Hospice and marketing consultant Catherine Watson is helping him build up his knowledge.
Catherine was approached by the hospice, as they wanted an experienced professional to come onboard to deliver short to medium term help, sharing their skills and expertise with Adam, and someone who was not necessarily involved with the third sector, offering Adam a different view of the world of marketing.
During his time at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Adam did not feel that university was for him and was actively looking for a role in marketing when he saw an apprenticeship advertised with the Cumbrian charity.
Adam started his apprenticeship in January 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said: “When I was doing my A-levels, I knew university was not for me. I wanted to stay in the area, so the apprenticeship was the perfect way for me to gain a marketing qualification, whilst also gaining valuable experience.
“The hospice’s apprenticeship programme offers a structured work-based learning programme that helps me learn as well as earn while studying for a nationally recognised Level 3 digital marketing qualification with Newcastle College.”
During their mentoring sessions, Catherine and Adam discussed ways of raising awareness of the charity via various channels and promoting the hospice’s 30th year.
Catherine suggested the idea to host a pool competition to put local people’s playing skills to the test as part of an exclusive event to raise much needed money for the hospice.
The pool tournament in aid of the hospice will be held on Saturday May 21 and will pit 30 players against each other in a knockout tournament.
Catherine said: “It has been a wonderful experience sharing my knowledge with Adam and coming up with unique ideas to fundraise. I have helped the hospice previously and I am humbled by their compassion and professionalism shown to patients and their families.
“We are a pool playing family and we wanted to do to something different to support the hospice in their 30th year and the pool competition seemed a great idea.
“There will be a pop-up pizza oven and we are getting in some fizz and, of course, hiring the best quality pool tables for the event.
“The event is being sponsored by Carlisle-based Grafix Signs. We have already sold a lot of the tickets to local companies who are looking forward to a day of fun – with a hefty bit of competitiveness thrown in! It will be a great networking opportunity too, and with only a limited number of tickets, anyone who is interested should get in touch as soon as they can.”
There are 30 tickets on sale for £300 each with the potential to raise a total of £9,000. Tickets can be bought by emailing catherine@bertandwills.co.uk
