A man is facing a lengthy jail term which a judge said will “inevitably be measured in many years” for a string of sex crimes which include child rape and the brutal mistreatment of a youngster.
Andrew Philip Burrows, 57, shook his head in the dock at Carlisle Crown Court this afternoon as he was convicted by a jury of 23 offences he had denied.
After a long-running trial, Burrows was unanimously found guilty of nine charges of rape — one victim being aged under 13.
He was further convicted, also unanimously, of multiple sexual assaults, some involving children; engaging in sexual activity with — and in the presence of — a child; causing a child to engage in sexual activity; and one charge which a judge said involved the “brutal” mistreatment of a youngster.
The court heard there were a number of victims.
Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the case and requested the preparation of detailed background information, including a psychiatric report.
Burrows, of Chapel Close, West Woodburn, near Hexham, is due to be sentenced on June 10, and was remanded in custody by the judge until then. His eventual prison sentence will “inevitably be measured in many years”, Judge Barker informed the jury of seven women and five men.
He thanked jurors for their hard work and persistence during the lengthy trial. “These are difficult cases for anybody to hear,” said Judge Barker. “The subject matter of them is a challenge.”
Burrows must also now sign the sex offenders’ register with Judge Barker telling the court with all confidence that the requirement will eventually be made for life.
