A Kendal man must sign the sex offenders’ register immediately for making illegal attempts to contact who he thought was an 13-year-old girl.
Stephen William Wetton, 62, faced three charges when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court this morning.
Wetton admitted two counts of attempting to cause or incite a child aged 13 to engage in penetrative sexual activity on both April 27 and May 5 of 2020; and he also pleaded guilty to one offence of attempted sexual communication with a child, committed between April 15 and May 6 2020.
It is said that Wetton had been in contact with an undercover operative during that time period.
The court heard he was previously a man of good character.
Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the hearing to obtain a probation service background report before Wetton, of Garden Street, Kendal, is sentenced.
He is due to receive his punishment at the crown court on May 26, and was bailed, conditionally, in the meantime.
Judge Barker told Wetton that as a result of his convictions he must now sign the sex offenders’ register, initially on an interim basis.
“The precise duration of that requirement will only be determined once the sentence has been passed,” said the judge.
