Free Buttermere shuttle bus returns for Lake District visitors

The popular free Buttermere shuttle bus has returned for the spring and summer season.

The Lake District National Park Authority and partners including Cumbria Tourism, Cumbria police and local councils are working together to look after the Lake District by reducing visitor pressure and enabling people to visit without a car.

The Buttermere shuttle spring service starts this Saturday from Cockermouth and will initially be running weekends, and the two jubilee bank holidays, June 2 and 3 June 5.

The route runs from Cockermouth to Buttermere village and via Loweswater on some journeys and is operated by local company Hobans.

The full summer Buttermere Shuttle service will start on July 23.

Another option for leaving the car in one place and exploring the Lake District more sustainably is the Keswick Park and Sail.

Parking is available at Keswick Rugby Club for only £4 a day and get 15 per cent off travel on Keswick Launch for access over to Cat Bells, Derwentwater lakeshore and the fells beyond. This service is available all season.

Lake District National Park Authority chief executive Richard Leafe said: “This year we are making it easier than ever for visitors to leave their car behind and enjoy more sustainable travel options throughout the Lake District.

“After its successful trial last year the Wasdale Shuttle will be back this summer, running a regular service from Netherwasdale and this year also connecting with trains at Ravenglass station, so providing sustainable transport all the way.

“We are introducing a Cat Bells shuttle service which will launch in the summer to further help reduce parking issues in the area.

“We are working with bus companies to offer special offers which will be released through the summer, watch our social media accounts for more details on these.

“And of course there is a wide selection of wonderful cycling and walking routes throughout the Lake District so that people can try a variety of sustainable transport this year.”
