Workington Reds’ vice-captain Brad Carroll has turned down a new offer at the club to move on for the 2022/23 season.
Carroll, who joined Reds from Kendal Town four years ago, has not revealed his signing plans but has recently been linked with Lancaster City.
The 25-year-old midfielder was signed by Dave Hewson for the Reds and quickly became a firm favourite with the fans in his time at Borough Park.
Carroll started 85 games for the Reds, plus 13 coming on as a substitute, and scored 19 goals.
New Reds boss Danny Grainger was keen to keep him at the club but Carroll has said it was the right time to look for new challenges.
The Reds have thanked Carroll for his services to the club and his dedication and have wished him well for his future career.
Grainger said: “We made Brad our best offer to keep him at the Reds but he made us aware he was seeking a new challenge in his career. He has been a great servant to the club and I’m sure this fan’s favourite will be missed, however, we will move on and seek to strengthen the squad.”
It’s the first indication of movement in the Workington squad as Grainger gets his feet under the table again.
The returning Grainger has already spoken to the vast majority of the players who were with the club last season under Chris Willcock and hopes to have decisions sorted quickly.
He has had discussions with the three out of county players – Kyle Harrison, Nico Evangelinos and Ruben Jerome – and said “it will depend on what’s best for them, and what’s best for us.” Grainger actually signed Jerome for the Reds ahead of his second season in charge which was cut very short.
